DEF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization, formed at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944, to maintain monetary stability in the world community. The IMF works closely with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (the World Bank), but directs its attention toward payment of external debts owed by countries with balance of payments deficits, rather than project financing. The IMF makes loans in the form of drawings (special drawing rights, SDRs) by member countries.

DEF

A whole new class of foods, called intermediate moisture foods (IMF), have been developed as a result of the U.S. space exploration program. These foods -- breakfast bars and snack foods, as well as pet food -- are produced with the careful use of certain food additives. The production of IMF foods is based on an increased scientific understanding of the chemical reactions involved in traditional food preservation methods such as pickling and salting.

The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is a part of the Sun's magnetic field that is carried into interplanetary space by the solar wind. The interplanetary mangetic field lines are said to be "frozen in" to the solar wind plasma. Because of the Sun's rotation, the IMF, like the solar wind, travels outward in a spiral pattern that is often compared to the pattern of water sprayed from a rotating lawn sprinkler. The IMF originates in regions on the Sun where the magnetic field is "open" that is, where field lines emerging from one region do not return to a conjugate region but extend virtually indefinitely into space. The direction (polarity, sense) of the field in the Sun's northern hemisphere is opposite to that of the field in the southern hemisphere. (The polarities reverse with each solar cycle).
