In marine insurance, extension of cover to include damage or loss due to latent causes such as breakage of the ship's drive shafts, bursting of its boilers, unseen defects in its hull, machinery, and auxiliary equipment; as well as due to errors in navigation, or negligence of its captain, officers, engineers, crew, pilots, etc.

The original clause grew out of a lawsuit brought in 1887 by the owners of a ship named "Inchmaree."

[Clause qui étend] la garantie de la clause de négligence à toute perte ou avarie subie par la coque ou la machine résultant d'un accident de manutention de la marchandise (chute d'un colis lourd endommageant un plafond de ballast, par exemple), des opérations de soutage, d'une explosion survenue soit à bord soit à l'extérieur du navire, de l'explosion de chaudières, de la rupture de l'arbre porte-hélice ou de l'arbre manivelle d'un moteur, ou bien encore d'un vice caché de la coque ou de la machine.

À l'instar de la clause de négligence, la clause Inchmaree couvre les dommages causés par la négligence de l'équipage, des affréteurs et des réparateurs.
