Generally, a more serious criminal charge as distinguished from a summary offence.

In Canadian law there are three classes of offences: i) indictable offences; ii) summary offences; iii) offences which, by the choice of the Crown, may be tried either by way of summary conviction or by way of indictment.

CONT

Generally speaking, indictable offences include all the serious offences in the Criminal Code. The term "indictable" is derived from "indictment" which was the written accusation presented by the grand jury.

OBS

"Indictable offence" is the technical term used in the Criminal Code whereas "criminal act" is the current expression.
