En cas de mélanome, le récepteur lymphocytaire CTLA-4 est inhibé par les cellules cancéreuses, ce qui empêche les lymphocytes T de détruire les cellules tumorales au niveau ganglionnaire. L'ipilimumab fonctionne en débloquant ce mécanisme inhibiteur.
