Record 2 2004-06-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
DEF

One of two or more molecules having the same number and kind of atoms and hence the same molecular weight, but differing in respect to the arrangement or configuration of the atoms. Butanol (C4 H9 OH or C4 H10 O) and ethyl ether (C2 H5 OC2 H5 or C4 H10 O) have the same empirical formulas but are entirely different kinds of substances; normal butanol ... and isobutanol ... are the same kinds of substances, differing chiefly in the shape of the molecules ...

OBS

isomer: usually used in the plural (isomers).

Key term(s)
  • isomers

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
CONT

[...] on appelle isomères des substances distinctes et séparables, ayant même formule brute, c'est-à-dire même composition centésimale et même masse moléculaire.

OBS

isomère : terme habituellement utilisé au pluriel (isomères).

Key term(s)
  • isomères

Record 3 2002-09-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
  • Cartography
DEF

A line on a map connecting points having the same monthly or seasonal precipitation, expressed as a percentage or fraction of the annual total ...

OBS

[An isomer] is similar to an isohyet, a line that connects points of the same total precipitation for a given time period or for a particular storm. Isomers and isohyets generally will not coincide. In regions with more than one rainy season isomeric analysis is useful in establishing the relative importance of each rainfall regime.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
  • Cartographie
DEF
