Selon la quantité d'eau présente dans une roche, à 600° on trouvera soit du pyrope seul, soit du pyropre associé à du clinochlore, du talc et de la cordiérite, soit du clinochlore avec du talc et de la cordiérite. Ce processus appelé kélyphitisation du grenat, et qui donne souvent des auréoles, sanctionne l'instabilité de ce minéral en présence d'eau, mais semble n'avoir guère de rapport avec la température ou la pression.
