The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KEMFRI) is a government parastatal, officially inaugurated under the Science and Technology Act. The Institute was established in 1977. KEMFRI was mandated to carry out research on marine and freshwater fisheries; on aquatic biology, including environmental and ecological studies; on marine geology including chemical and physical oceanography; to disseminate research findings; to co-operate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programmes and on matters relevant to research to liaise with other research bodies within and outside Kenya carrying out similar research.
