Since 1972, the KNK has been operating in the Kernforschungszentrum near Karisruche. As scheduled, the core has been turned into a fast core with successful operation since 1976.

La puissance électrique du KNK est 20 MWe. L'une de ses particularités est de faire un large emploi des aciers ferriques dans ses structures.

CONT

La RFA disposait depuis longtemps d'un réacteur à neutrons thermiques refroidi au sodium : KNK, d'une puissance de 20 MW électriques. Ce réacteur a été équipé ultérieurement d'un cœur «oxyde» à neutrons rapides, appelé KNK 2, qui a divergé en octobre 1977. Il est installé au Centre d'Études Nucléaires de Karlsruhe.
