One knot equals about 1 1/7 statute miles per hour.

The term comes from the knots on the line of a chip log which were spaced at a distance of 47 feet 3 inches. The number of these knots which ran out while a 28-second sand-glass emptied itself gave the speed of the ship in nautical miles per hour. As a measure of speed the term is always knots, and never knots an hour.
