Le premier sens de «tie-break» est «bris d'égalité», la méthode ou le système en vue de départager des ex æquo. Ici, on lui accole le sens de «jeu, échange de départage d'égalité», en limitant la définition à la situation qui existe au volleyball (16 points). Ailleurs, la Délégation générale à la langue française donne à «tie-break» le sens de «manche décisive», terme restreint aux sports joués en manches.
