Les facteurs rhumatoïdes sont des immunoglobulines (de type IgM le plus souvent) dirigées contre le fragment Fc des immunoglobulines «dénaturées» de type IgG. On les dépiste habituellement par le test au latex (agglutination par le sérum du patient de particules de latex recouvertes d'IgG humaines) et par la réaction de Waaler-Rose (agglutination par le sérum du patient de globules rouges de mouton recouverts d'IgG de lapin).
