Chez les "Osteichthyens", le rayon [de nageoire] est ossifié et homologue d'écaille : d'où son appellation de "lépidotriche." Il peut être simple et rigide (rayon épineux des Téléostéens dits Acanthoptérygiens : Perche, Vive ...) ou segmenté, généralement ramifié et flexible (rayon mou des Téléostéens dits Malacoptérygiens : Truite, Hareng, Brochet ...). Primitivement pairs, ils peuvent fusionner en une seule rangée. Ils peuvent être surmontés d'une double nappe de petits "actinotriches" apparus très tôt chez l'embryon et refoulés vers le bord libre de la nageoire.
