On appelle la ville de Thunder Bay (Ontario) et sa région administrative, la «Tête-des-Grands-Lacs» ou, régionalement, la «Tête-des-Lacs», cette ville étant à la tête du lac Supérieur, lui-même à la tête du réseau des Grands Lacs. Le bassin hydrographique qui constitue la source d'alimentation première des Grands Lacs se nomme la «tête des Grands Lacs» ou, régionalement, la «tête des Lacs». Dans le contexte présent, le nom de la région sert à des fins administratives.
