Depuis que Le Parisien a révélé que certains patients avaient été infectés lors de leur séjour par une bactérie, le xénopi, et qu'ils étaient atteints d'une tuberculose osseuse, tous [...] posent la même question : « Ai-je été contaminé? »

Les mycobactérioses atypiques ont souvent un aspect radiologique identique à la tuberculose. C'est la culture qui permet de montrer que ces BAAR correspondent, pour les plus fréquents, à un Mycobacterium xenopi, kansasii ou avium intra cellulare (MBAIC). Les deux premiers colonisent parfois seulement des lésions séquellaires ou les bronches de bronchopathes chroniques. Tous colonisent fréquemment les malades atteints de SIDA.
