Certaines membranes épimaculaires, en se contractant de façon centripète, produisent une image ronde ou ovale, à contours nets, dans la macula, pouvant faire porter à tort le diagnostic de trou maculaire. Cet aspect, appelé pseudotrou maculaire, est dû à une verticalisation des bords de la dépression fovéolaire, par rétraction centripète de la MEM [membrane épirétinienne maculaire], transformant la dépression fovéolaire à pente douce en une dépression plus abrupte qui simule un trou maculaire.
