Vessels are insured and classed by their owners on their strength, seaworthiness and equipment and are inspected regularly in order to maintain class. Once a vessel is assigned a class, it is expected to be kept in good condition during the entire classification period.

Pour conserver la classe qui lui a été attribuée par une société de classification, un navire doit respecter certaines règles de celle-ci et, notamment, être inspecté à intervalles réguliers par les experts de la «classe» (c'est-à-dire de la société de classification) ou occasionnellement à la suite d'un événement de mer ou d'une avarie machine. Faute d'exécuter dans les délais impartis les réparations, travaux d'entretien et contrôles recommandés par les experts, la cote (classe) est retirée.
