Le syndrome de Mallory-Weiss survient généralement après d'importants efforts de vomissements et se manifeste par une hémorragie digestive haute (vomissements de sang rouge), qui peut être massive. Plus souvent, le saignement est modéré et évolue favorablement sans traitement. Le diagnostic se fait par endoscopie (fibroscopie œso-gastro-duodénale). Le traitement est presque toujours médicamenteux (antiémétiques, antisécrétoires) et peut faire appel aux transfusions en cas d'hémorragie massive.
