[Furent] mises en évidence dans le sous-sol lunaire les concentrations de masses qu'on allait prendre l'habitude de désigner sous le nom de «mascons», mais dont la nature n'apparut pas clairement. Dans un premier temps, on imagina que les mascons auraient pu être les restes de grosses météorites dont l'impact avait créé les bassins lunaires.
