This mediating function recognizes the co-evolutionary origins of morphological and chemical properties of flowers and the behavioral and sensory features of their visitors within the context of the ecological setting in which interactions take place (Real 1983).

Dans le cas de la pollinisation, un troisième «acteur» (insecte, oiseau, vent) intervient dans le transport du matériel génétique entre les individus d'une même espèce. Cette fonction médiatrice résulte d'une coévolution entre les espèces végétales (propriétés morphologiques et chimiques des fleurs) et les agents pollinisateurs (comportements et acuité sensorielle), dans le contexte écologique où ces interactions se déroulent (Real, 1983).
