Megace [R] belongs to group of medicines called "progestogens" and is related to the naturally occurring hormone called progesterone. The active ingredient in Megace [R] is called megestrol acetate.

Vendu sous la marque de commerce Megace, l'acétate de mégestrol est une version synthétique de l'hormone féminine naturelle qu'est la progestérone. Depuis de nombreuses années, on l'utilise comme traitement palliatif de certains cancers avancés. Il y a une dizaine d'années, les chercheurs ont remarqué un gain de poids chez les femmes qui recevaient Megace dans le cadre de leur traitement du cancer du sein. Au terme d'un certain nombre d'essais cliniques, Megace a été approuvé pour stimuler l'appétit et la prise de poids dans les cas de perte de poids liée à un cancer ou au sida.
