La mélilite cristallise dans le système tétragonal (quadratique) et se présente le plus souvent en prismes à section carrée. Elle est très répandue en tant que constituant des roches effusives où elle joue le rôle de feldspathoïde, c'est-à-dire qu'elle capte la silice des magmas plutôt riches en calcium et déficients en sodium et potassium.
