[…] le géographe […] doit voir dans un paysage […] les conditions d’une action avantageuse. Il doit donc opérer des choix dans la représentation du terrain de façon à y distinguer des possibilités de tactiques et de stratégies. Les cartes militaires et les projets de toutes sortes sont les plus nombreuses pour la cartographie du rivage français. Elles témoignent de l’importance militaire accordée aux côtes occidentales du royaume à la fin du XVIIème et au XVIIIème siècles. Ces cartes ont donc été soigneusement archivées.

Les cartes militaires sont surtout utilisées par les Indiens des Prairies qui se déplacent à cheval. Leurs expéditions guerrières les mènent parfois en territoires inconnus. […] L'armée britannique produit des cartes militaires utiles aux marches d'entraînement et des plans de reconnaissance à plus grande échelle à partir des levés des cantons. Des détails comme la résistance des ponts et les possibilités de cantonnement des villages sont ajoutés.
