The MTO, consisting of a laptop computer integrated with Global Positioning System (GPS) and a wireless communication modem, was developed primarily to provide capabilities to transfer digital data through the use of wireless telecommunications technology including the geo-positioning of vehicle-based mobile units with coordinate information derived from GPS satellites. The system allows field staff working in remote areas to utilize their vehicles as mobile versions of their office.
