The moderator cover gas system fulfils several functions. The cover gas system controls pressure in the calandria. The cover gas keeps a cushion above the moderator. This allows for expansion and contraction of the heavy water. It also absorbs transient high pressure caused by the liquid injection shutdown system.

Le circuit du gaz de couverture du modérateur joue plusieurs rôles. Le circuit du gaz de couverture contrôle la pression dans la calandre. Le gaz de couverture agit comme un coussin au-dessus du modérateur. Il laisse place à la dilatation et à la contraction de l'eau lourde.
