When people form and cling to false beliefs despite overwhelming evidence, the phenomenon is labeled motivated reasoning. In other words, rather than search rationally for information that either confirms or disconfirms a particular belief, people actually seek out information that confirms what they already believe.

Le raisonnement motivé est en fait une version plus élaborée du biais de confirmation qui fait en sorte qu'on croit d’emblée, sans preuve, des affirmations ou des faits qui confirment nos croyances ou nos valeurs et qu'on rejette ceux qui les confrontent. Dans le cas du raisonnement motivé, on rassemble des faits qui concordent avec notre objectif (ou nos motifs) en leur accordant une importance démesurée et on minimise ceux qui ne cadrent pas avec lui, donnant ainsi une aura d'objectivité et de rationalité à nos conclusions.
