Lors de l'érosion éolienne, les particules les plus fines de diamètre inférieur à 0,02 millimètre, sont emportées par le vent et forment des nuages de poussière en suspension qui peuvent atteindre une altitude de plusieurs milliers de mètres. Ces poussières peuvent être lessivées par la pluie, constituant des pluies de boue ou retomber à plusieurs milliers de kilomètres sous forme de loess.
