Par ailleurs, la technique des télécommunications à faisceaux étroits multiples fut démontrée avec succès en 1991 avec le lancement d'Italsat, élaboré par le Conseil de recherche italien. Avec six faisceaux étroits dans la bande Ka, ce satellite interconnecte les émissions en TDMA entre des stations terrestres situées dans les principaux centres économiques d'Italie.
