[Le] codage des signaux vidéo couleur Y, Db, Dr est appelé codage en composantes séparées [...] Les signaux vidéo codés en composantes séparées ne peuvent pas être radiodiffusés sous cette forme, car cela obligerait à employer trois émetteurs simultanés pour un seul programme. On procède à un multiplexage temporel pour combiner les trois signaux Y, Db et Dr en un seul signal. On prend comme référence la durée d'une ligne vidéo (64 µs = 1/15 625 s). Les 12 premières microsecondes sont réservées au top de synchronisation ligne, à des signaux audio numériques (nombre de canaux variables selon la qualité souhaitée), et à des signaux de services. Ensuite, le signal Y est transmis avec une compression temporelle de rapport 1,5, soit 35 µs au lieu de la durée utile d'une ligne vidéo. Enfin, selon la ligne, Db ou Dr est transmis avec une compression de rapport 3. Ce type de codage est appelé MAC («multiplex analog component»).
