Infections with Mycobacterium kansasii and other species such as Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium scrofulaceum, Mycobacterium gordonae, or Mycobacterium xenopi may also occur in AIDS. These infections both clinically and pathologically are more likely to resemble MTB infection than MAC infection.

Les mycobactérioses atypiques ont souvent un aspect radiologique identique à la tuberculose. C'est la culture qui permet de montrer que ces BAAR correspondent, pour les plus fréquents, à un Mycobacterium xenopi, kansasii ou avium intra cellulare (MBAIC). Les deux premiers colonisent parfois seulement des lésions séquellaires ou les bronches de bronchopathes chroniques. Tous colonisent fréquemment les malades atteints de SIDA.
