Acute ischemia results in a spectrum of deleterious effects, ranging from transient depression of contractile function (myocardial "stunning" and "hibernation") to severe abnormalities, such as reperfusion-induced lethal arrhythmias and accelerated myocardial cell death (both necrosis and apoptosis).
