Les résines paraissent provenir de l'oxydation des essences. Elles sont constituées par des dérivés terpéniques, insolubles dans l'eau, solubles dans l'alcool, les graisses et les solvants organiques. Elles sont principalement fournies par les conifères et les térébinthacées. Elles entrent dans la composition des onguents et dans la préparation de nombreux vernis industriels.

Les deux types de résines naturelles encore utilisés pour la fabrication de vernis, peintures, enduits et préparations similaires sont la colophane, qui entre pour les trois quarts environ dans la constitution de la térébenthine, et qui forme la [gemme] du pin, et les copals, produits de la sécrétion de plusieurs végétaux [...] Elles sont constituées par un mélange d'esters d'alcools et d'acides résineux de poids moléculaire élevé, et de carbures d'hydrogène de la série terpénique.
