The Aboriginal Friendship Centre Program provides funding for the operation of friendship centres, the National Association of Friendship Centres and its affiliated provincial/territorial associations. Friendship centres are designed to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal people living in or passing through urban areas. Friendship centres provide a wide range of services and programs for Aboriginal people in the areas of housing, education, employment, recreation, and human resource development, and cultural maintenance. Responsibility for the management and administration of the Aboriginal Friendship Centre Program was transferred from the Department of Canadian Heritage to the National Association of Friendship Centres effective April 1, 1996.

Le Programme des centres d'amitié autochtones accorde du financement pour les activités des centres d'amitié de l'Association nationale des centres d'amitié et des associations provinciales et territoriales qui y sont affiliées. Les centres d'amitié améliorent la qualité de vie des Autochtones vivant en milieu urbain, ou qui y séjournent. Ils offrent tout un éventail de services et de programmes destinés aux Autochtones dans les domaines du logement, de l'éducation, de l'emploi, des loisirs, du perfectionnement des ressources humaines et de la culture. Depuis le 1er avril 1996, le ministère du Patrimoine canadien a confié la gestion et l'administration du Programme des centres d'amitié autochtones à l'Association nationale des centres d'amitié.

The Settlement Agreement between the Governments of Canada and BC, and Alcan, was signed in 1987 to resolve flow issues in the Nechako River and create the NFCP to ensure the conservation of salmon resources utilizing the upper Fraser River.
