The Institute for Energy Technology (Institutt for Energiteknikk - IFE) was set up by Royal Decree of 30 May 1947 as the Institute for Atomic Energy (Institutt for Atomenergi - IFA) and became an independent foundation in 1953. It reports to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. L'Institut des technologies de l'énergie (Institutt for Energiteknikk - IFE), qui a été créé par le Décret royal du 30 mai 1947 sous l'appellation d'Institut de l'énergie atomique (Institutt for Atomenergi - IFA), est devenu en 1953 une fondation autonome. Il relève du Ministère du Pétrole et de l'Énergie.
