La règle (slice) joue un rôle essentiel dans la formation de la feuille. Elle débite la pâte à une vitesse voisine de celle de la toile sans créer de turbulences excessives; son débit doit être uniforme sur toute la largeur de la table de fabrication. La règle se compose d'une lèvre supérieure (upper lip), d'une lèvre inférieure ou tablier (bottom lip, apron board) et de leurs dispositifs de réglage. L'angle que forme le jet de pâte avec la toile détermine le point d'impact du jet sur le rouleau de tête (breast roll). Cet angle dépend de la position angulaire de la lèvre inférieure ainsi que de la position relative des lèvres inférieure et supérieure. Le jet sera d'autant plus horizontal que la lèvre inférieure sera avancée.
