Osteoarthritis is a form of non-inflammatory arthritis, which is caused by the breakdown of cartilage, which covers and protects bones. Often due to "wear and tear", pain and swelling can occur when the cartilage breaks down. Eventually, the cartilage may wear away entirely and bones will rub together.

En fait, comme le dit la définition, l'arthrose est non inflammatoire tandis que l'ostéoarthrite sous-entend qu'il y a de l'inflammation (à cause de la terminaison «-ite» du grec «-itis»). L'arthrose fait partie de la famille des maladies rhumatismales et se distingue par le fait qu'elle est au départ reliée à la dégénérescence des tissus de l'articulation, avec réaction inflammatoire éventuelle, alors que d'autres formes de maladies rhumatismales, telle l'arthrite rhumatoïde, sont d'emblée des maladies inflammatoires. En somme, c'est à cause de l'inflammation qui accompagne souvent l'arthrose que les spécialistes du domaine considèrent que «ostéoarthrite» et «arthrose» sont interchangeables. En anglais, «osteoarthritis» est bel et bien une arthrite non inflammatoire malgré sa terminaison trompeuse.

The optical amplifier ... allows the power of a signal to be restored to its original strength without the usual optical-to-electronic conversion. In an optical amplifier, erbium ions are embedded in the glass of a fiber. When stimulated with a laser, the excited ions revivify an optical signal that has weakened after a journey of tens of miles. Optical amplifiers ... demonstrate superior performance for very high speed networking: unlike electronic amplifiers, they can amplify a signal carrying data at transmission speeds greater than 30 gigabits per second, and they can boost the power of many wavelengths simultaneously.
