In 1999 the Crown corporations appointed senior executives to be responsible for official languages in their organizations, with the role of making official languages more visible in their institutions and ensuring respect for the official obligations for institutional bilingualism (service to the public, language of work and equitable participation of English-speaking and French-speaking Canadians) and the development of the official language minority communities.
