La hernie ombilicale ne doit en aucun cas être confondue avec deux autres affections beaucoup plus graves : l'omphalocèle et le laparoschisis, qui imposent une prise en charge hospitalière spécialisée immédiate. Dans ces deux maladies de la paroi abdominale, des organes normalement situés dans l'abdomen (intestin, estomac,...) se trouvent placés à l'extérieur, comme si la paroi abdominale n'avait pas su les entourer.
