Créée en 1966, la région administrative de l'Outaouais s'étend sur 34 924 km² et sa population atteignait 283 773 habitants en 1991. Elle tire évidemment son nom de la rivière des Outaouais qui, sur une grande partie de son cours, sert de frontière entre l'Ontario et le Québec et dont le bassin supérieur, très ramifié, est couvert de réservoirs et de barrages.
