With greater mass and thus greater gravity, supermassive black holes attract more matter that becomes hotter and more volatile. In some cases, this super-heated matter shoots off into the universe as jets of gas that can be millions of light-years long. Astronomers have observed these gas ejections, known as outflow, and see it as a way of regulating galaxy expansion and the birth of new stars. 2, record 1, English, - outflow

outflow winds: ... dry winds that develop and flow out of the interior of the province [usually the British Columbia] and funnel through steep-sided inlets on the mainland coast before heading for [the sea]. 3, record 4, English, - outflow%20wind
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Outflow winds occur when differing air masses are separated by a coastal mountain barrier. In extreme cases the cross-barrier pressure gradient and the high degree of stratification (often approaching a distinct layered structure) result in channel winds which exhibit hydraulic features. 4, record 4, English, - outflow%20wind

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
4, record 4, French, - vent%20de%20terre
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS
1, record 4, French, - vent%20de%20terre

Microbursts result as a strong downflow bursts from a parent cloud and strike the Earth's surface at an angle (usually) off-the-vertical. The air striking the Earth flows out from the centre (called an "outflow") at speeds which depend on the downflow speed and striking angle. As the outflowing air undercuts the surface air, a vertical roll begins to develop that eventually encircles the downflow centre as a horizontal vortex ring. 1, record 10, English, - outflow

Figure 7.5.10 illustrates the general circulation for the outflow microburst where the downflow is completely encircled by the horizontal vortex; and the rotor microburst which does not form a continuous circular horizontal vortex, or may be part of a macroburst or a break-away from a ring vortex. 1, record 10, English, - outflow
