On distingue deux types, les implants actifs et les implants passifs. Les seconds ont essentiellement un rôle de soutien (plaques, vis, clous...) ou de mobilité (prothèses articulaires). Leur problème essentiel est la biocompatibilité. (Universalia, 1988, p. 287)

OBS

Le GDEL limite implant, dans le sens de prothèse, au domaine dentaire.
