La classification des Diatomées se fonde surtout sur la structure du frustule. On distingue deux groupes : les Centriques et les Pennées (...) Les Pennées ont des valves à symétrie bilatérale ou asymétrique, mais l'ornementation est toujours disposée symétriquement par rapport à une ligne longitudinale médiane. Elles ont un raphé (...) ou un pseudo-raphé (...). Les diatomées sont les plus répandues et les plus abondantes des algues.
