Pervasive alteration results from extended interaction between basalt and seawater-derived fluid (evolved seawater) under anoxic to suboxic conditions at low temperature (probably 10°-50 °C). Pervasive alteration ceases once secondary minerals fill fluid pathways (i.e., open cracks).
