L'histoire d'un sédiment comprend : - L'accumulation des matériaux au fond de la mer (sédimentation «sensu stricto») [...] - L'évolution de ce matériau sous l'action de facteurs multiples, parmi lesquels l'activité géologique des organismes (microflore en surface, bactéries en surface et en profondeur), joue un rôle prépondérant; c'est ce que nous nommerons la diagenèse biochimique. - En profondeur, cette activité biologique disparaît progressivement; seuls sont actifs les facteurs physico-chimiques (pression, température); c'est la diagenèse physico-chimique.
