These examples go to prove that neither the oft-mentioned distinction between a market and non-market economy nor the claim that the former is the only source of wealth survive critical examination. Instead, we should adopt a more realistic and less ideologically driven model: that of a plural economy.

Dans le but de porter remède à la crise sociale consécutive à la remise en cause de l'État-providence fordien, le concept d'économie plurielle tend à se répandre aujourd'hui en même temps que ses collatéraux, le tiers-secteur, la pleine activité et l'allocation universelle. Ce concept fait l'objet d'une théorisation qui est très contestable. Il part du constat selon lequel toute économie posséderait trois pôles : l'économie marchande, l'économie non marchande, dans lesquelles règnent des relations monétaires, et l'économie non monétaire basée sur la réciprocité.
