A man-made element with atomic number 94. The most common isotope is239Pu, but240Pu and241Pu also are produced in nuclear reactors. The nuclear properties of239Pu make it a good nuclear fuel and nuclear explosive.239Pu is radioactive and decays by alpha emission with a half-life of 24,400 years.
