On distingue entre les aérosols vrais mono-dispersés constitués de micelles de diamètre inférieur à 1 micron, et les aérosols polydispersés obtenus par insufflation de gaz sous pression dans des liquides ou par action d'ultra-sons sur deux phases gaz-liquide ou gaz-solide. Les premiers sont homogènes et stables; les seconds sont instables et les dimensions des micelles sont hétérogènes.
