Le patinage intensif ne doit pas être confondu avec le patinage de vitesse ni être considéré comme du seul ressort du hockey. Il est plutôt un outil précieux pour tous ceux qui veulent s'adonner à un sport sur patins, patinage artistique, hockey, patinage de vitesse, ringuette, etc., en ce qu'en améliorant la technique du coup de patin, il accroît, de ce fait, le rendement et la rapidité du patineur. Les anglicismes «power skating» et «powerskating» pour le désigner sont à proscrire. Le terme est en usage depuis 1982 environ. On a d'abord utilisé "patinage dynamique"; "patinage intensif" s'est ensuite imposé.
