La modélisation des produits possède également un intérêt stratégique certain : la «Carte-produits (Product map)» [...] permet d'expliciter et de caractériser les éléments-clés du portefeuille de produits détenu par l'entreprise; l'évolution, la chronique des produits y est décrite par des graphes dont les sommets sont les produits et les arcs les relations de «descendance» qui les relient. Les auteurs font valoir que la modélisation réalisée par la «carte-produit» permet de diriger et de cibler les projets de développement à venir sur des critères de cohérence et de complétude du portefeuille de produits de l'entreprise.
