On parle souvent d'engrais composés "complets". Ce terme de complet est assez équivoque. Il désigne théoriquement des engrais composés ternaires, qui devraient apporter aussi du calcium, du manganèse, du soufre et quelques oligo-éléments (mais aucune règle ne précise les quantités). Certaines formules, cependant, cherchent à apporter les trois éléments N, P, K dans une proportion convenant bien aux exportations d'une culture donnée;on peut, à la rigueur, appeler ces produits engrais «complets», mais à condition que le sol puisse fournir les éléments qu'ils n'apportent pas.
