L'échantillonnage par quadrats permet de mesurer des aspects importants de la formation végétale tels que la couverture, la densité et la fréquence. La couverture correspond au pourcentage de la superficie du quadrat qui est recouverte par une espèce donnée. La densité correspond au nombre de plantes qui ont pris racine dans chaque quadrat. La fréquence correspond au pourcentage de la totalité des quadrats dans lesquels au moins une plante d'une espèce donnée a pris racine.
